Dana stopped as soon as she had shut the door. She could not leave him. Not like this. Turning back to the office door bearing his name she cracked it open and saw his face. He had waited until she left to break down. Tears obscuring his eyes and his lips pursed painfully together. Finally his head dropped into his hands and she rushed over to his side again. Dropping down on her knees, she patted his back and shushed him softly in his ear.

"Scu . . . Scully? I . . ."

"Mulder, let me take you home." She pulled him our of his seat and let him out of the building.

The night stretched out in front of them and it was not until they were almost in front of her building that he realized he was not going to his apartment. She parked the car and went to get his out of the car. "Scully?"

"I wanted you to be close. In case something . . . come up."

Mulder walked slowly noticing everything but seeing nothing. Reaching Scully's apartment, he stepped in and stopped. She shut the door and watched him moving toward the couch. Her hand shot out and took hold of his shoulder.

"Mulder, please, come sleep in my bed."

His lips moved silently. Dana hoped, prayed that a sly word or innuendo would pass through them, but he only nodded and moved toward the back room. Scully followed. He stopped next to the bed. Without being told, he began unbuttoning his shirt and toeing of his shoes. Being naturally curious, Scully found herself watching from the doorway.

Mulder did not know what he was doing. He followed the motions, stripping himself down to his boxers. Finally, something set in as he heard a short gasp and a throat clear behind him. He turned slightly as saw the outline of a woman. A silhouette of curves he knew must have been his partner.

"I was going to take a shower quickly. Um, You should probably get in and try to get some sleep." He nodded, watching her move toward the bathroom. It was not until she turned on the shower that he followed her instructions and lay down on top of the comforter. Staring out at the dim light of the street lamp and the sound of the running water in his ears, he slowly slipped into the twilight of sleep.

Dana ran the towel over her hair, wringing each strand dry. Her thoughts were muddled and focused on the man lying in her bed. Any other time she might contemplate some unpartnerly thoughts, but this was not the time. She peeked through the doorway and saw he was in fact asleep. She stepped carefully to the dresser and pulled out a pair of pajamas. Looking back at the sleeping man, she untied the robe and dropped it to the floor. A quick thrill that left her body as she pulled on the silk sleep garments.

He looked so innocent and young as he slept. Arms crossed over his chest protecting him from nightmares. The stubborn curls of his hair covering his forehead even in his sleep. Dana managed to get the comforter out from under him and pulled it over him. She crawled under the thick blanket and moved in close to his body.

"I'm so sorry. Maybe Mr. Sparks was right. The only thing worst than not knowing is finding them dead. We'll find her." Dana brushed aside the curl only to have it set back in place on her. "The only thing I can do is be here for you. So I'm here." She leaned into his body, working her arm in between his and tucking herself against him. She let her eyes shut knowing she was helping him out in a small way.

"Thanks."

Her eyes popped open and looked up at the tiny smile that had found a place on his lips. She sighed and snuggled back against him.
