Summary: Diana's views on herself, Scully and Gibson.
I feel like a third wheel. There is no reason I should have even accepted Fox's invitation to ride along with them to see the boy. I could have driven myself. Diana, what have you gotten yourself into this time?
He is still handsome as the moments before I left. I was stupid . . . I was foolish . . . Why am I doing this to myself? I am not a sadist. I'm just a woman hoping to take back what I can no longer have.
He loves her. I know it. He loves her in a way he never loved me. I might have been there when he needed a companion, a friend . . . but that was seven years ago. The time we had has past. Any attempts I make are futile, but as Fox knows, I don't mind the work.
She's quite beautiful. Appears to be a professional through and through. Must have been quite the challenge to Fox to get her. He never needed to work with me. I fell for those eyes the moment they focused on me. Perhaps she knows how to keep him busy so their jobs won't be jeopardized.
I make small talk with her. Nothing more than case facts and a general reason for tagging along. She's not impressed. Any FBI agent could see through her defenses. Especially we psych students. She tolerates me. I am a threat and she wanted to know the real reason I'm here. Honestly, I'm not sure.
I don't want to intrude. She doesn't believe me, so she walks in short strides. Fox doesn't notice. He's completely into the case. Sometimes nothing changes.
Gibson. Amazing child. He's looking at me, almost like he wants to be in my head. He sees right through us. Especially Fox. He knows what he's thinking.
"You're thinking about one of the girls you brought with you."
What? Gibson is actually in Mulder's mind. I wonder if . . .
" . . . And one of them is thinking about you."
He can. He's able to read multiple minds! Maybe I should make Fox's day and share that his partner is thinking of him in a less than professional manner.
"Which one?"
Gibson turns back to Mulder. "He doesn't want me to say."
I roll my lips. What is Fox thinking? I know he and his partner must be . . . Or maybe not. Perhaps they aren't lovers. Oh god. I am really in the way this time. Now how to get out?
