Files were strewn over the desk in the little room. The orders were clear and simple: pick-up someone who can do the job properly this time. Time was of the essence and they had lost enough already. The woman browsing the files had failed to accomplish her mission. The Powers-that-be had been so sure that it was a match made in heaven. They were wrong.

Diana Fowley was fuming. She wanted to reach the top, no matter what. She wanted to succeed in a man’s world. For that, she had agreed to lie, to deceive, and to betray but in the end, she was never content. She had been removed from her assignment because she had failed to make any progress and her superiors wanted immediate results. She had been transferred to Europe but before flying out, she had been given the job of picking her replacement. The irony of the situation wasn’t lost on her; she had been given the task of  finding a better person for the job, than her.  This time, it should be someone who would be oblivious of their role in the master plan, which would mean that this person would have to be monitored tightly.

She had already discarded a large pile of candidates. She was sure she’d know when she’d found the right candidate. She opened the next folder and her eyes were immediately drawn to the credentials: a doctor specialized in pathology, recruited out of Med School into the FBI Academy and assigned to Quantico to teach Pathology. The agent had written her senior thesis on Einstein’s Twin Paradox. Her scientific background made it very likely that she would never accept any of Mulder’s paranormal theories. Fowley smiled. This could be just the approach she was looking for: debunking the X-Files Division by pitting science against the paranormal.

She turned the page and was confronted with the candidate’s mug shot. Agent Dana Scully was young, petite and a redhead. Fowley’s smile widened slightly. This was even better than she could have imagined.  There was no chance that Mulder would be interested in this kind of woman; small, flat-chested and far too intelligent. It was perfect. She liked the idea that she was unforgettable to Mulder and that her replacement would not was nowhere near to replace her. He was such a romantic fool and their break-up had been hard on him. To say she loved him would have been too much even if he was wonderful in the sack. He came with too much emotional baggage and she had no intentions of being the one to deal with his bruised psyche. She wanted a man able to provide for her: a nice wardrobe, big houses and more importantly Power. Mulder could give her none of these things and sex wouldn’t give her what she wanted.

She closed the folder. Dana Scully was the ideal choice to become Fox Mulder’s new partner. This time, he wouldn’t be sidetracked like he had been with Fowley and her sex drive. Doctor Scully was just the person to put Mulder’s theories to the test with her science and which would finally bring about the closer of the X-Files division, once and for all.

She pushed speed dial number 1 on her cell phone.

“It’s me. I’ve got the perfect candidate.”
