The ring

She was reading the file #525652 relating Arthur’s Dales first X-Files. She discovered in that folder that William Mulder was involved in Edward Skur’s disappearance. She closed the file and something fell on the floor. She crouched to catch it. It was a wedding ring. What did it do in this folder? She searched for an inscription and found it “From T to W Forever”.

She was so engrossed by the piece of jewelry that she didn’t see that Mulder was standing in the doorway watching her.

“I used to wear it when I started with the bureau” He said making her jump

“My god, Mulder! You never knock?

 “Why? It’s my office”

“Smart ass. Why did you stop to wear it?”

He approached her and took the ring in his hand.

“My mother gave it to me and it was all I have left from my father, the one who loved me before becoming an alcoholic. When I discovered how deep he was involved in the conspiracy, I stopped to wear it.”

“Nobody ever asked you if you were married?”

“It kept the women away from me so I could drown in my quest”

She could see his suffering in that statement. Mulder has been dedicated to his quest for so long that he kept himself from the world outside of his quest.

She decided it was time to let the cat out of the bag. She opened the two first buttons of his shirt and unclasped the chain that was hanging there.

“Why don’t you start on wearing your own wedding ring, Mr Mulder?”

“I’ll show mine if you show yours, Mrs Mulder”

 You’ve got a deal”

He got her golden chain and retrieved her wedding ring the same way she has done with his.

He took her left hand and put the gold band where it belonged. She mirrored his action by putting his wedding ring back on his left hand wedding ring finger. It felt normal. They were a normal couple and it was time to stop hiding.

He kissed her tenderly and he felt a lot better now. He belonged to someone for real.
