Telling Mulder

Mulder entered his apartment, lost in thought. The whole fiasco in the Federal Statistics Center had given him a lot to think about and he didn’t immediately spot the sleeping form on his couch. He gasped when he saw the red hair spread over the black leather and suddenly realised that she knew he had risked his life yet again.

He sighed and sat down on his coffee table. Her protruding belly caught his eye every time he was looked at her. It had been strange, to say the least, waking up and find her at his bedside looking so pregnant.  But as usual, they didn’t talk about it. The proverbial elephant stayed in the corner.

Before his abduction, they had finally accepted that they would never be able to conceive a child of their own. It was a heart breaking admission for both of them but in the end, their failure to conceive had been a catalyst for them as they finally crossed the line between friends and lovers.

It had felt good being together and they had spent a month enjoying the closeness  of their new relationship before his abduction. He remembered the dizzy spells and the chills, her being so ill in the morning and how they worried themselves silly over the possibility of her cancer coming back.

She was pregnant. She *is* pregnant. Pregnant with his child. He’s not stupid and once he was able to think again, he did the math and it all added up. He was so immersed in wanting revenge and finding some meaning to his own ordeal, that he had forgotten to tell her how happy he was. How proud. He was so closed off that she hadn’t said anything to him. The silent communication had to stop.

He caressed her cheek gently. She opened her blue eyes and the tiredness there broke his heart all over again.

“I’m back” he stated, meaning more than having returned from his latest ditch.

 “I’m glad” she answered simply.

He smiled as he pulled back the blanket covering her large belly, so full of life, and gently placed his hand over it.

“Mulder, you’re going to be a daddy” she announced, eyes brimming with tears.

“Thank you” he said as his child kicked, saying hello to him for the first time.
